Permaculture Design Certificate - 3 June to 14 June 2024
Permaculture is the design solution to the earth’s problems through human settlement and inhabitation of earth. It is a design science that turns human life into a comprehensive solution, instead of a profound problem. It integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies – imitating the no waste, closed-loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture studies and applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts at any scale. It is a multi-disciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics and community development.
The 72-hour Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) Course allows you to be the change you want to see in the world. Based on Bill Mollison’s Permaculture Designers’ Manual, it provides skills and solid knowledge in Permaculture design as a science that can create abundant ecosystems sustainably in the backyard, a small farm or on a larger broad acre landscape.
The course teaches you how to design sustainable living systems for a wide variety of landscapes and climates. It includes the application of Permaculture principles to food production, home design, construction, energy conservation and generation, and explores alternative economic structures and legal strategies supporting permaculture solutions.

To date, thousands of permaculture designers have been certified through PDC courses but to our knowledge this is the first time a course has been offered in the snowy mountains .
Designers who have completed a PDC now comprise a global network of educators, ecological activists, individuals and groups of committed people working together to change the way we view and design our landscapes. They influence major corporations and create new business alternatives.

Location
The actual site is an establishing permaculture demonstration site in the heart of the snowies. Caleb Berhnard Hoffman has been establishing the site over the last 3 years as quite a profound demonstration of what can be done across a temperate homestead with classically poor Australian mountain soils.
This course is set in the snowy mountains of Australia, during the very start of the 2024 winter snow season. To explore a significant part of Australian geography and as a profound way to study water, we can’t help but offer students a weekend skiing trip half way through the course. There will be opportunities for both beginners and experienced skiers over the 2 day weekend. This is completely optional, but if you don’t want to miss this, come prepared for a bit of cold in Australia’s most famous snow. Bookings to be made through Perisher or Thredbo (See ‘Winter Sports’ below for more details)
Please be aware that the farm is a 12 minute drive from town and there is no public transport. If you need help getting out each day please reach out and we can try to link students with each other to carpool.
Accommodation
Jindabyne being a primarily tourist town has a lot of accommodation options to suit all budgets and preferences. We do recommend booking as early as possible as things can get busy in the winter. There is no onsite accomodation available.
Meals
Morning tea and lunch are provided each day. Please bring a water bottle.
What to pack
Jindabyne can get cold in June! It is the start of the snow season and as such we recommend packing coats, boots, beanie and gloves. Please note that closed toe shoes must be worn on property. The sun can still burn you especially as we are at higher elevation than most of Australia so remember your sunscreen, hat and sunglasses.
As there will be a lot of information delivered during this course be sure to bring writing materials or a laptop to take notes.
You are welcome to take pictures but we ask that you do not post on social media without express permission of those in your photos, especially children.
A water bottle! We have rainwater tanks on site for your to refill from and we always recommend staying hydrated.
About the Teachers
Both Caleb and Sam are permaculture professionals who make their living from Permaculture. Involved in regeneration projects globally for private individuals, the UN, government organisations and in aid they have incredibly rich experience between them.
Winter Sports
The weekend in the middle of this course is opening weekend at both Perisher and Thredbo. If you are interested in a weekend of snow sports please book directly with Perisher or Thredbo. There are a wide range of options for all skill levels, lessons, snow shoeing and cross country skiing as well as skiing and snowboarding. You can hire everything from clothing to equipment or bring your own if you are a seasoned pro. If you are not interested in snow sports there are also scenic passes for those on foot who want to take in some mountain air.
